It's been a while since I had an art project. I kinda miss having you know, personal goals.
I'm supposed to be in some horrid suburb of Houston at someone else's Christmas party right now. And I really don't want to go but I should. I guess I'll take a sketchbook, or something.

Blah, I don't like this one. I tried to do stuff with it and none of it worked.

:P

Yarr. Originally I was gonna draw a normal rainbow but the paintsplatter was much more fun. Digital art lets me do stuff I'd never attempt in real life... like I would never splatter paint across a canvas I had already worked for hours on IRL. I don't care if it may look better - I'm not taking that chance!

Mrf. Seafoam is interesting to draw.

...as you can see, I've completely abandoned any semblance of trying to go in order.
This one was pretty fun. I got stuck on the background so I went on Devart and d/led a whole bunch of different brushes that were really fun to play with and provided excellent texture. And then I went on DaFont and downloaded a whole bunch of different fonts that satisfied my inner typographist. So this probably coulda been finished like, 3 hours ago if I weren't playing on the internets. But I assure you, it was for a good cause.

I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out, actually. Their expressions are really damn close to the ones in my head.

God, the last leg of this was horror. My computer was like, "LADY. 1.5 GIGS OF RAM IS NOT GOING TO CUT IT FOR THIS PROCESS." Srsly, my computer and I are going to spend some quality time cleaning up unnecessary programs and defragging this week.
But yeah, it's done. :) The final image has been scaled down to 40% of original and it's still huge like X-box so I've stuck it behind a cut for you. Also, please enjoy this teaser:

:/ I feel kinda bad having people think I'm really hardworking b/c I'm staying late at the office when really I'm doodling my own things. Oh well.
I apologize if this stretches out your friends' page.

I wanted to try out Linda Bergkvist's style of painting. She's got a great tutorial on painting realistic-looking skintone that I sadly fall far, far short of. But still, using her color palette and following her instructions has at least resulted in some improvement.
And right, the hair falling over one half of the face is primarily to get rid of the other eye so I wouldn't have to paint it. Because painting is pain to a t. Har har.
Anyway, woo-hoo! This 100x thing is still alive and kickin'. We just passed the 1-year mark, and I did 11 drawings last year. At this rate, I should finish this thing in just under a decade! Sweet, huh?

Cheerier pictures to come soon, I hope.

Smile is a terrible name for this pic. Her smile isn't what's important. It's her birthin' hips that are the main focus. I'm gonna stick with "Hips".
Pah, I am a slave to my whims. ;_;. I really wanted to go home 1.5 hrs ago, but I kept on seeing just one more thing that would be so easy and so fast that I'd be stupid to not fix it... and then...

So the final Photoshop document has about 37 visible layers and an additional 7 that I kept around since I wasn't sure if I was going to use them, and takes up 130 MB on the hard drive. Actually, 30-odd layers is kinda low, for me, but the resolution of this image is really high so I had to cut corners where I could. I'm starting to get grumpy working at home now... the 1.5 gigs I have at home really just doesn't cut it, and I have no desk space, either. And there are no giggly Korean girls at work, either, so I get peace and quiet... mmm....
But, FWIW, I'm satisfied enough to let go of this damn thing. She ain't what I wanted her to be, but she turned out alright, and that's good enough for me.
It's about 10 mins before midnight and I haven't friggin' left work yet. *scrubs face* Blargh, someday, I'll get a handle on this "responsible actions" thing.

I doodled this one on ACTUAL PAPER. :O
The yellowing is actually the result of digital camera + less than ideal lighting at my workplace. But I kinda liked the natural texture it provided, so I stuck with it. What's always interesting to me is how different an image "feels" to me before and after running it through the black function box of Photoshop filters.

( Original photograph behind the cut )
I kinda feel like I didn't have enough hard edges here... I can't seem to find a balance between hard & soft edges. When I draw strictly on the computer, everything is hard-edged, and in the end I have to use tricks to blur things. And when I draw on real paper, everything ends up being soft-edged, but I don't know any tricks to harden edges without it looking really tacky like it came out of a middle-schooler's hands via Photoshop Elements. *shudders* I mean, the way I think of it, you can always remove definition and "vague" things up but delineating is infinitely more difficult.
It's a shame drawing with actual pencil just feels so much easier. It's like mixing your own coffee instead of inputting the correct # of moles of C12H22O11 you'd like with that. Plus, there's wiggle room for happy mistakes that you can't get digitally.

...doodling last night. Decided after the fact to make it part of the 100x challenge. I haven't drawn A for a while for... well, good reason, I guess. She was always my favorite to draw, b/c she didn't put up a fight like B and she wasn't a boy, like D. Boys are hard to draw. I like organic forms, dammit, and angular lines make me go, "What am I, an architect?"
Long hair for I like drawing long tresses. The lines are fun. I kinda feel like I haven't worked this image enough, but I also feel like I don't feel like working this image until it feels 'enough.'
...this one's the only sketch I made this week that I didn't want to shoot on sight, and now I think it's over-dodged (which I hate) too bright (which I also hate) and too literal an interpretation of the original prompt (need I be repetitive?). Oh, and the colors. Don't get me started on the R-Y-B color palette, I hate balanced color palettes, they're just too... augh.
Only thing I actually like is the seagulls. :) I do like those seagulls, they are great. I drew them in like, 5 seconds! And they are somewhat photo-realistic looking, which I realize is a result of resolution and the human eye substituting details, but still, they really worked out.
Sketch was based on something I doodled during one of our lab's meetings. Maybe I'm just being too hard on this one because the sketch had so much character and spunk. She was pouty, and knew how to work it, much like Jessica Rabbit. This girl just looks like "Hi, I'm going to be here and be mum. Mum, get it? Because chrysanthemums are flowers? Hahaha... hey, why isn't anyone laughing?"

I've been watching Adrian play with textures for about 3 years now. Yeah? Well I can play with textures too.
I feel kinda cheap though. I mean, the painting part took a really long time, but the part where I played with textures felt a little too easy. Where's the blood, the tears, the pain? Where's the effort?
I got kinda tired of painting by the end, so I didn't finalize some areas. Eh, whatever. This was taking too long anyway.

Not much different, but had to post b/c it's finished. I need to stop being so impatient that I just wanna show off... heh. The biggest visible difference is the feathers. I'm going to put this one down as "Seeking Solace" (even though that title is RETARDED but whatevs) b/c well, it kinda fits...
'k that's about all for today. Might be leaving work early, who knows.
This one turned out pretty well, I think. Towards the end I was having some trouble w/the retouching, but I experimented with color a bit in this one and things just seemed to work out. It sucks that I can't work at a higher resolution on this machine, though. I tried to pack too much detail in here and it just failed. :(
( Cut for boobie bottom peaking & pantie shot )
Also: I left my color palette! No more repeating muted pink in this one!

Next on the list is Light.

I tried two new things: One, I drew the head shape slightly differently. The nose curve is no longer a curve but a pretty flat incline. Two, I gave up the really complicated and unrewarding coloring methods I've been using. Screw you, separation of color areas. Hello, monochromatic borderless coloring with gradient overlaid.
And I guess an unlisted third is that there's a bird. :P Omg not just people anymore! Ree draws teh bird.
Proportions are off, but I don't care, since visually it works.
Also: Have you noticed I've been using the same grayed pink in like, everything? Yeah, I just noticed that. I guess I must be going through a color phase. Omg I'm like Picasso!
Also also: These two started out being aniki-otoutou but um, I couldn't pull it off. But now they look like lesbians. Don't you think the top one looks like a chick too? Man! this sucks I can't draw boys. :(
